Introduction #

In this doc you will find usefull information regarding your Rust Game Server at ProRedLine. After reading this doc, you’ll know how to configure your server, enable additional features, and more.

Startup Variables #

Once the server has been installed, you will need to configure it before it can run as expected.

On your server’s dashboard, go to the “Startup” tab. Here, you will find several settings that you can configure according to your specific needs. Below is a list of options available for your Rust server in the “Startup” tab:

  • STARTUP COMMAND and DOCKER IMAGE are read-only variables and cannot be modified.
  1. Max Players. The maximum amount of players allowed in the server at once. This is prefilled with the recommended maximum amount for your purchased package but can be changed to any other number. Note: Changing this value above recommended can impact your servers’ performance.
  2. Server Name. The name of your server in the public server list. Searching this name in the server list allows players to see and join your server. This name has a 40-character limit.
  3. Level. The world used in your Rust server. The options are “Procedural Map” (Random generated map), “Barren” (Random generated empty world) or “HapisIsland” (Official map, not generated)
  4. Description. The description under your server title. Commonly used for rules & info. Use \n for newlines.
  5. URL. The URL for your server. This is what comes up when clicking the “Visit Website” button. Can be left empty.
  6. World Size. The world size for a procedural map.
  7. World Seed. The seed for a procedural map.
  8. Server Image. The header image for the top of your server listing. Can be left empty.
  9. (READ ONLY) RCON Port. Port used for RCON connections. Please read Enabling Additional Ports down below for more information about using RCON with your ProRedLine server.
  10. RCON Password. Password used for RCON connections. For this, RCON needs to be enabled first. Please read Enabling Additional Ports down below for more information about using RCON with your ProRedLine server.
  11. Save Interval. Sets the server’s auto-save interval in seconds. Default is 60 seconds.
  12. Additional Arguments. Add additional startup parameters to the server.
  13. Regen Server. If the server should have its files removed and regenerate the server seed on reinstallation. Default is OFF. Note: The files in question will be removed permanently and cannot be restored.
  14. Files to remove. A space-separated list of files to remove when regenerating the server on reinstall if the ‘Regen Server’ variable is enabled. Note: The files in question will be removed permanently and cannot be restored.
  15. QUERY PORT. Port for QUERY connections.
  16. (READ ONLY) APP PORT. Port for Rust+ applications. Disabled by default. Please read Enabling Additional Ports down below.
  17. Custom Map URL. Overwrites the map with the one from the direct download URL. Invalid URLs will cause the server to crash.
  18. Modding Framework. The modding framework to be used: carbon, oxide, vanilla. Defaults to “vanilla” for a non-modded server installation.

Starting your server #

  • Once you have configured all the settings, you can start the server by going to the “Console” tab and clicking “Start”.
  • Wait a few moments for the server to boot.
  • RCON will be enabled after the server finished preparing assets. Note that your server will not use RCON (even when the RCON enabled message shows in console) unless requested through a ProRedLine ticket.

Changing Configurations #

If you wish to change settings not listed in the Variables section, you can edit the server’s config file. However, note that any changes to the Variables options in the “Startup” tab will override the corresponding settings in the config file. We recommend only changing values in the config file that are not listed in the Startup tab.

Additional Features #

Due to technical limitations and security, we only assign 1 port (the primary game port) to each server automatically. But Rust can be used with RCON and a Rust+ application. To enable these ports/features, we have to manually assign an additional network port to your server.

Requesting these features #

If you would like to use any of these ports/features for your Rust server, please create a ticket at https://support.proredline.com and explain which ports/features you would like to use and your order/subscription ID. Once received, we will manually add these network ports to your server free of charge. We are working on making this an automated process in the near future, but for now, it has to be done manually by ProRedLine Staff.

Note: Once ProRedLine Staff begin adding these network ports to your server, your server may be unavailable for 10–15 minutes.

Updating server #

To update your server’s software, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the “Settings” Tab: Open your server dashboard and navigate to the Settings tab.
  2. Scroll Down: Locate the option labeled Reinstall Server.
  3. Click on “Reinstall Server”: This will start the reinstallation process.

Important note: Reinstalling your server using this method will update the core files only. Your saved data and mods will generally remain intact, custom configurations can sometimes be reset. However, we strongly recommend creating a backup of all essential data before proceeding, as some server types may still overwrite or remove custom content.

Clean Reinstallation #

To fully reinstall your server with a clean set of software and files:

  1. Stop the Server: Ensure your server is not running.
  2. Delete All Files: Navigate to the Files tab, select all folders and files, and click Delete. Or use the variables in the startup section.
  3. Reinstall the Server: Once all files are removed, follow the same steps outlined above for updating your server.

Note: This process will permanently remove all files from your server, including custom folders, mods, and configurations. This action is irreversible unless you have created a backup in advance.

Troubleshooting & Support #

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your server at ProRedLine, please reach out to us at ProRedLine Support. For game-related inquiries, we recommend contacting Facepunch at Facepunch Support.
