Email protocols define how email is sent and received between your devices and the mail server.
At ProRedLine, only modern and secure protocols are supported.
Supported Protocols at ProRedLine #
ProRedLine supports the following email protocols:
IMAP (Supported) #
IMAP is used for receiving and synchronizing email.
IMAP:
- Keeps emails synchronized across all devices
- Stores emails on the server
- Reflects changes instantly on all clients
- Is recommended for all users
IMAP is the default and recommended protocol.
SMTP (Supported) #
SMTP is used for sending email.
SMTP:
- Requires authentication
- Uses encrypted connections
- Is mandatory for outgoing email
- Works with all supported email clients
SMTP must always be configured with authentication enabled.
Unsupported Protocols #
POP3 (Not Supported) #
POP3 is not supported at ProRedLine.
POP3:
- Downloads emails to a single device
- Removes emails from the server
- Causes synchronization issues
- Increases risk of data loss
- Is considered outdated
To ensure reliability and consistency, POP3 access is disabled.
Why POP3 Is Not Supported #
POP3 is not supported because it:
- Breaks multi-device synchronization
- Causes missing emails across devices
- Makes troubleshooting difficult
- Increases support complexity
- Does not align with modern email usage
IMAP provides a safer and more predictable experience.
Required Security Settings #
All supported protocols require:
- Encrypted connections (SSL/TLS)
- Authentication using full email address and password
Unencrypted or anonymous connections are not allowed.
Protocol Usage Summary #
- Receiving email: IMAP
- Sending email: SMTP
- Legacy access: Not supported
Any email client must support IMAP and SMTP.
Common Configuration Mistakes #
- Selecting POP3 during setup
- Disabling SMTP authentication
- Using insecure ports
- Using partial usernames
These mistakes will prevent email from working.
Responsibility Notice #
You are responsible for:
- Using supported protocols only
- Configuring email clients correctly
- Avoiding legacy protocol usage
ProRedLine does not enable POP3 on request.
