SSL and TLS are security technologies that encrypt data between a visitor’s browser and your website.
This prevents third parties from reading or modifying transmitted information.
TLS is the modern and secure version of SSL.
The term SSL is still commonly used to describe both.
Why SSL/TLS Is Important #
SSL/TLS:
- Protects login credentials and form data
- Prevents data interception
- Is required for secure websites
- Is expected by modern browsers
Websites without SSL may show security warnings.
How SSL/TLS Works #
When SSL/TLS is active:
- Data is encrypted during transmission
- The website uses
https://instead ofhttp:// - A certificate verifies the website’s identity
Visitors can verify this by checking the browser address bar.
What AutoSSL Is #
AutoSSL is an automatic certificate management system provided through cPanel.
AutoSSL:
- Automatically issues SSL certificates
- Automatically renews certificates
- Applies certificates to supported domains
- Removes the need for manual SSL installation
AutoSSL runs automatically in the background.
What AutoSSL Covers #
AutoSSL typically secures:
- Primary domains
- Additional domains
- Subdomains
- Alias domains
Domains must correctly point to the hosting server for AutoSSL to work.
When AutoSSL May Not Work #
AutoSSL may fail if:
- DNS is not pointing to ProRedLine
- The domain does not resolve publicly
- There are conflicting DNS records
- The domain was recently added and DNS has not propagated
These are configuration issues, not certificate failures.
Manual SSL Certificates #
Manual SSL installation is generally not required.
AutoSSL is the default and supported method.
Custom certificates are not provided unless explicitly agreed via support.
HTTPS Redirection #
SSL enables secure connections, but websites may still load via http://.
You may need to:
- Enable HTTPS redirection
- Update website configuration
This depends on your website software.
Security Responsibility #
You are responsible for:
- Ensuring domains point correctly to the server
- Using HTTPS for sensitive content
- Not disabling SSL-related features
ProRedLine does not disable SSL protection on request.
Common Issues #
- Website still loads via HTTP
- Browser shows certificate warnings
- Mixed content warnings
- SSL active but site appears insecure
These issues are usually website configuration-related.
