Spam filters in cPanel help detect and manage unwanted email before it reaches your inbox.
They work automatically and apply to all email accounts on your domain.
Spam filtering is available on Email Hosting and Web Hosting packages that include email services.
How Spam Filtering Works #
Spam filtering uses automated checks to analyze incoming emails.
Messages are evaluated based on:
- Sender reputation
- Message content
- Technical headers
- Known spam patterns
Emails are assigned a spam score.
Based on this score, messages may be delivered, filtered or rejected.

Default Spam Protection #
By default:
- Spam filtering is enabled
- Most spam is automatically handled
- No manual configuration is required
For most users, default settings provide sufficient protection.
Role of Webmail and Roundcube #
In addition to server-side spam filtering, webmail clients such as Roundcube also manage spam.
Roundcube:
- Automatically moves detected spam to the Junk folder
- Allows manual marking of messages as spam or not spam
- Improves filtering accuracy over time
This means spam handling is shared between:
- Server-side filters in cPanel
- Inbox-level filtering in webmail
Spam Folder Behavior #
Spam emails are usually:
- Moved to a Junk or Spam folder
- Automatically deleted after a retention period
You should review the spam folder occasionally to avoid missing legitimate emails.
Adjusting Spam Filter Settings #
Advanced users can:
- Adjust spam sensitivity levels
- Configure automatic spam deletion
- Create allowlists or blocklists
Incorrect adjustments may cause legitimate emails to be blocked.
When Not to Change Spam Settings #
Do not change spam filter settings if:
- Email delivery is working correctly
- You are unsure what a setting does
- You rely on default protection
Unnecessary changes can reduce email reliability.
Common Issues #
- Legitimate emails marked as spam
- Spam emails reaching the inbox
- Junk folder not checked regularly
- Overly aggressive filtering
Most issues are resolved by reviewing spam folders and adjusting sensitivity carefully.
Responsibility Notice #
You are responsible for:
- Reviewing spam folders
- Managing allowlists and blocklists
- Not deleting important emails automatically
ProRedLine does not manually review spam filtering decisions.
