MX records define which mail servers receive email for your domain.
Without correct MX records, incoming email will not work.
MX records are essential for Email Hosting.
What an MX Record Does #
An MX record:
- Tells the internet where email for your domain should be delivered
- Points to a mail server hostname
- Uses priority values to determine delivery order
Only servers listed in MX records are allowed to receive email.
How MX Priority Works #
Each MX record has a priority number.
Important rules:
- Lower numbers have higher priority
- Email is delivered to the lowest available priority first
- Backup servers use higher priority numbers
Example:
- Priority 10 → primary mail server
- Priority 20 → backup mail server
Where MX Records Are Managed #
MX records are managed via:
- The DNS Zone Editor in cPanel
- Or an external DNS provider, if used
Changes require DNS propagation time.
MX Records at ProRedLine #
When using ProRedLine Email Hosting:
- MX records must point to ProRedLine mail servers
- Only ProRedLine MX records should be present
Mixing MX records from multiple providers will cause delivery issues.
Common MX Record Mistakes #
Frequent errors include:
- Keeping old MX records from a previous provider
- Using multiple providers at the same time
- Incorrect priority values
- Typographical errors in server hostnames
Any of these can break incoming email.
MX Records and Email Hosting Only #
MX records:
- Control incoming email only
- Do not affect outgoing email
- Do not affect websites
Outgoing email is handled via SMTP and authentication.
Changing MX Records Safely #
When updating MX records:
- Remove old MX records
- Add only the required new records
- Allow time for DNS propagation
- Avoid repeated changes
Email delivery may be inconsistent during propagation.
Testing After MX Changes #
After updating MX records:
- Wait up to 24–48 hours
- Send test emails from an external address
- Verify delivery in webmail
Do not assume immediate results.
Responsibility Notice #
You are responsible for:
- Correct MX configuration
- Removing conflicting records
- Allowing time for propagation
ProRedLine does not automatically correct MX misconfigurations.
